Dr. Peter Breggin

by Tom on March 29, 2012

Ok, so there’s this Psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Breggin, and well he is a sort of a radical. He has been called The Conscience of Psychiatry. What I’m getting at here is that this guy is pretty much anti-meds when it comes to depression. I’ve always thought that Psychiatry was only a step or two from the dark ages, so I’m interested in what this guy has to say. It seems he is pretty skeptical of most types of Psych meds including benzos, stimulants, and anti-psychotics. There is some really interesting stuff on his site regarding cases of malpractice and horrible reactions to and side effects from medications.

Now I’m not saying the guy is right on everything. Just that he’s got an interesting take on things, and he’s definitely right about some of it. I think medications, and possibly even ECT, have their place, but they are way over-prescribed. Psych-meds can be a damn scary thing. You ever see somebody with a bad case of Tardive Dyskinesia? Would you be comfortable taking a drug knowing that that is a possible permanent side effect? Well hells bells, neither would I.

Breggin is really down on the way kids are being drugged for ADHD and such. And I don’t blame him one bit. I think it’s a real tragedy what Psychiatrists are doing to our kids these days. His testimonial was instrumental in a case in Canada where Prozac was blamed for a teen spontaneously stabbing and murdering his friend. The argument was that the Prozac made the kid manic and impulsive. I have direct experience with this, I was manic for a long time, before my Effexor dosage was finally lowered, at which point I became more stable and have never been manic since. Nor was I ever manic prior to taking the Effexor.

Unfortunately, I don’t think there are near enough doctors like Dr. Breggin. We need many more who are willing to be honest about the state of Psychiatry, and willing to speak out about it. I’m gradually starting to discover others though and will try to write about them more in the future. There is an interesting blog called The Carlat Psychiatry Blog. It is written by a well-respected Psychiatrist, who is pro-medicine, but is highly critical of Psychiatry’s relationship with the pharmaceutical industry.

Facebook Causes Depression?

by Tom on March 29, 2012

Ok so I came across an article titled Facebook Linked to Depression in Girls, Psychologist Says, and I thought “wow that’s stupid,” but then after I took a peek, it actually made some sense. The psychologist is saying that these girls see their friends posting about all this happy and fun stuff and then they look at themselves and think about how their life sucks, while their friends are doing so much and having fun.

The reason it made sense to me, is that even though I’m a middle age man, I have had this exact same experience several times. Judging by their Facebook posts, many people seem like they are so alive and having such a good time. A lot of them really seem to have it all together. So I’ve read Facebook at times, and ended up feeling quite inadequate compared to some of my “friends.” I can see where it could lead to feeling depressed because I’ve experienced it before.

But the truth, of course, is that behind the scenes many of these people are not really happy at all. They are trying to present a certain image, but in reality, their life could suck just as much as the next guy. Perhaps some of them are simply trying to stay upbeat. So I think the bottom line is not to let Facebook get you down, no matter your age or gender.

One Thing That Really Seemed to Help With My Anxiety

March 28, 2012

After I went off of Effexor, which I was on for many many years, I devoloped harrowing, horrific and truly debilitating anxiety. I mean really nasty stuff where I’d wake up in a panic attack every morning, and would sometimes pace the floor until my feet were sore. If you think this is isn’t a [...]

Great News For Lexapro Users

March 28, 2012

Well, on March 14, 2012 the patent for Lexapro ran out. This means big savings are coming for Lexapro users, as one generic is already out, another has been approved by the FDA, and I would figure more are coming soon. Supposedly the average cost for a month’s supply is about $120 if you don’t [...]

About me and this site

March 27, 2012

My name is Tom and I’m from St. Louis, MO. I have an interest in depression and anxiety because I started suffering from them at a very young age. In my late twenties, I went on the anti-depressant drug Effexor (Venlafaxine.) I was unable to get off of the Effexor because of horrible withdrawal-like effects. [...]
